London Southend Airport was planning to grow rapidly over the next decade, and was central to the regeneration of the borough, the wider region and the Thames Gateway.

Airport expansion is an issue high on the public agenda, both politically and socially, so it was vital that a solid and integrated communication and consultation campaign was created. The client commissioned BECG to undertake a programme of stakeholder and community involvement around proposals to improve the airport, related planning applications, and a broader programme of public and community relations.
How we assisted
There was a clear need to build support for the airport, positioning its brand locally while creating a clear understanding of the proposed improvements. Campaign tactics included:
- A stakeholder audit, including a ‘segmentation’ exercise, ensuring a clear picture of the stakeholders involved
- A series of briefings with key political stakeholders
- A series of high-quality newsletters
- Behind the scenes tour of the airport, providing more than 400 residents with an opportunity to take a tour of the airport, airfield and get an idea about its current operations and future aspirations
Following effective consultation and engagement, the airport was able to uncover significant support for the proposed improvements to the runway. This support was mobilised and communicated to the planning committee, and planning permission was granted.
