The application was given a unanimous vote of approval from Birmingham’s Planning Committee
Calthorpe Estates had submitted a hybrid application detailing flood defence improvements works combined with outline planning permission for purpose-built student accommodation.
Although there was support for the flood defence improvement works, Councillors across different parties expressed reservations concerning the perceived negative impact the student accommodation would have on the local area. As a result, the application was voted down at the first committee, but was later deferred by the Chair.
With a tight turnaround required, BECG was instructed after the first committee result to conduct targeted stakeholder engagement, including meetings with several key members of Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee.
Additionally, a comprehensive briefing document was produced for ward and Planning Committee members, featuring perspective images of the student accommodation block while highlighting the economic and social benefits the development would provide.
Upon reconsideration, the application was given a unanimous vote of approval from Birmingham’s Planning Committee.
