BECG and Cavendish Advocacy are holding a number of events at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester this year across Monday 4 October and Tuesday 5 October.

Party conferences take place every year in the autumn and are an opportunity for political party members and organisations to get together alongside MPs, Ministers, local councillors, national and business media, and other influential stakeholders. The conferences provide a unique opportunity to influence and help form policy, as well as be the first to witness key announcements from Government and Opposition.

We have been supporting clients to make the most of party conferences for 20 years, and make use of our unrivalled local, national and international connections. This year, we’ll be holding three events covering some of the key issues facing the UK Government and wider economy. You will need to register for the conference to be able to attend our events.

These are:

The Road to Net Zero: How Can Business Help to Make Net Zero Affordable and Achievable

Monday 4 October, 08:00 – 09:30
Exchange 4-5 Combined, Manchester Central

There is only one direction of travel in the climate change debate but hitting the UK’s ambitious targets in a way that is affordable to the average person is one of the biggest challenges. Innovation led by business will be at the heart of making sure measures to combat climate change are affordable to the public, but we are lagging behind our rivals on R&D spending.

This fringe event will focus on overcoming the barriers to the private sector increasing their spend on innovation, and what the Government must do to foster the right environment for innovation to thrive.

Speakers include:

  • Steve Norris – Senior Strategic Counsel, Cavendish Advocacy
  • Lord Bilimoria – President, CBI
  • Katherine Bennett – Chief Executive, High Value Manufacturing Catapult
  • Tom Sasse – Associate Director, Institute for Government

What’s the Beef? Why trade deals always become about animals

Monday 4 October, 13:00 – 14:30 (hosted by Cavendish Advocacy, part of the BECG Group)
Victoria Suite, Midland Hotel

Experts from farming, animal health and trade will look at the relationship between trade and animal welfare including why these issues play such a key role in trade deals and how they are evolving.

Speakers include:

  • Gareth Morgan – Managing Director, Cavendish Advocacy
  • The Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP
  • Sir David Amess MP
  • David Henig – Expert Advisor to the UK Trade and Business Council, Director of the UK Trade Policy Project and Cavendish Advocacy Advisory Board Member
  • Ian Anderson – General Manager – Allflex Livestock Intelligence (MSD Animal Health)

Can the construction sector meet the demands of Building Back Better?

Tuesday 5 October, 08:00 – 09:30
Lancaster Suite, Midland Hotel

The construction industry was closed down in the first lockdown. Since then, there’s been a shortage of hauliers, materials and skilled tradespeople. The construction industry is at the heart of the government’s ‘Build Build Build’ agenda and the Covid-19 recovery. This fringe event will focus on how the construction industry can drive the economic recovery from Covid-19 and what more needs to be done to allow the industry to do so.

Speakers include:

  • Steve Norris – former Government minister & BECG Group Senior Strategic Adviser
    Marco Longhi MP
  • Kate Henderson – Chief Executive, National Housing Federation
  • Brian Berry – Chief Executive, Federation of Master Builders
  • Eddie Tuttle – Director of Policy, External Affairs and Research, Chartered Institute of Building
  • Mark Farmer – Government Champion for MMC in Housebuilding
